A 5 axis machine is the right choice when you need to machine complicated parts on multiple sides. A 5 axis machine can cut 5 of the 6 sides of a cubic shaped part with a single setup, saving a ton of time. For an overview of 5 axis machining, see our blog post here. Note that 5 axis machining is not for beginners. However, this machine can be used as a 3 axis machine by leaving the trunion (A axis) and platter (C axis) assembly unistalled. The Z stage can be mounted at different heights on the column to allow for more or less spindle to table clearance.
Because of the uniqueness and complexity of 5 axis parts, you must provide your own custom workholding solutions for attaching 5 axis parts to the rotational platter. There are a series of tapped holes in the platter than can be used to attach parts directly or to attach a fixturing device.
The machine will come with a control computer, keyboard, and mouse. You must provide a monitor. You can not use a different computer to operate the machine. The control computer is for control only and does not have CAD/CAM (design and toolpathing) software installed. Pleasure be sure you have access to 5 axis capable CAM software. Fusion 360 is available to hobbyists and start-ups for free. Commercial users that don’t qualify must pay for Fusion 360 or another 5 axis CAM package. We will provide a Fusion 360 post processor file customized to this machine’s characteristics that defines important parameters such as the maximum tilt ranges, preferred trunnion tilt directions, and rotational axis designation. We do not provide post-processor customization for any other CAM package.
